Does art have to respond to the world around us? And where does creative expression end and social or political messaging begin?

Martin Pošta (Signal Festival), Maxim Velčovský (Lasvit) and Ester Valtrová (Díky, že můžem) will discuss how contemporary social issues, history and values find their way into art and cultural projects—and what role institutions, audiences and commercial partners play.

Moderated by Evelína Beníšková from the CzechCrunch editorial team.

About the programme

Art and culture often reflect the times in which they are created—from political and historical events to current social issues. In this discussion, we want to explore how these themes can be brought into an artwork or cultural programme without reducing it to an overly obvious message. We’ll also ask whether artists and cultural institutions feel a need—or a responsibility—to respond to what’s happening around them.

We’ll approach the topic from three different perspectives.

→ Maxim Velčovský will share his experience as an artist and discuss how social issues find their way into his work.

→ Martin Pošta will offer the perspective of a Signal Festival organiser, drawing on his experience of selecting and presenting art to a broad audience.

→ Ester Valtrová will bring the perspective of a programme curator at Díky, že můžem, which uses its cultural programme to engage with history, democracy and social issues.

We’ll also look at the many factors that shape art and cultural projects, including the context and institutions in which they are created, audience expectations and responses, and collaboration with commercial partners.

We’ll discuss where individual artists and organisers draw their own lines, how they preserve their creative freedom, and whether there are subjects or approaches they would choose not to explore.
